Lucerne Valley - In the early 1900s it all started with the Box S Ranch the home of James
and Anna Goulding. The Box S presided until about 1916. Then, Mr Goulding and Dr. Jim Pahl from the Good Samaritan
Hospital in Los Angeles named the area Lucerne Valley for growing alfalfa called lucerne.
Today you can walk through the pioneer section of Lucerne Valley Memorial Park on Highway 18
and see headstones and markers for the Goulding family. A chimney is all that remains of the Box S Ranch. It's located behind
"Filippi's Emporium" on Highway 18 across the street from the post office.
